As part of its ongoing commitment to inspiring the next generation of construction workforce, North West based Harry Fairclough Construction recently facilitated a work experience placement for 15-year-old student Liam Amson, who joined the team on-site at its Macclesfield Leisure Centre refurbishment project.
Liam spent a week gaining valuable experience on-site and throughout his time shadowed experienced members of the HFC team both on site and in the office to see what a career in construction involves.
Liam is the son of HFC’s SHEQ Manager, Rob Amson, who is responsible for advising colleagues on best processes for ensuring site safety and more recently has been working to raise awareness of mental health issues which are prevalent in the construction industry. With three generations of joiners in the Amson Family, Liam is keen to carry on the family tradition and gaining work experience at HFC was a great way to see how exciting and varied a career in construction can be.
During his time on-site, Liam was involved in a range of tasks from taking dimensions of drawings, drawing layouts of areas of the building and helped with tidying up on site, dust suppression activities and even some light demolition work.
“I really enjoyed my time on site with the HFC team; using the breaker, clearing up rubble, moving pipe work to the skips and helping to take dimensions and measurements of the building were all jobs I enjoyed, but one of my favourite tasks was helping to take a wall down! Working in construction has always been appealing to me as I like the idea of being out on site rather than sat in an office environment.” Liam Amson
Paul Harris, Contracts Manager at Harry Fairclough Construction said: “Liam settled in quickly and got on well with the team, mucked in and seemed to really enjoy himself!”
