“I joined the Harry Fairclough team three years ago and had previously been a Lead Engineer at a civil engineering consultancy. I was looking for more contractor and site experience and wanted to work for a business that delivered a diverse range of projects, to boost my knowledge and career development opportunities. I began life at HF as a site engineer, which involved setting out, and managing quality controls and I was recently promoted to Assistant Site Manager.

“My line manager is one of the company’s Managing Directors, which gives me direct access to the most senior person in my team and this has been invaluable. I am currently based onsite at Urenco, a long-term client for the business, where we deliver both building and civil engineering projects. Working in a high security, live environment poses a number of challenges but also presents the opportunity to design innovative solutions that meet the client’s requirements. I have also spent time on other Harry Fairclough projects, including education buildings, giving me access to a wide range of ambitious developments.

“In my previous role, I would produce the drawings but now I also work to those drawings and I get a lot out of working with a trusted and established team of subcontractors which allows me to develop my management experience and provides exposure to a wider skillset.

“There is a real close-knit mentality here and many of the staff have been with the business for a long time. Managing Director, Peter Walthall, is onsite regularly and I get the opportunity to work closely with him as well as the client project team – and I really value that senior input. I recently started an Institute of Civil Engineers Chartership and the company is supporting me as I work towards this qualification. With this encouragement, I intend to develop further in my site management role and progress to being a project manager in the future.”
